What I Wish I Knew Before Moving to St. Cloud, FL

When my wife and I moved to St. Cloud, Florida, we didn’t do much research. We planned to stay for only six months—but that was over seven years ago, and we’re still here!

If you’re thinking about moving to St. Cloud, I want to share the insights I wish I had before relocating—covering everything from housing, schools, parks, and weather to alligators and hurricanes.

1. Lakefront Park: A Hidden Gem in St. Cloud

🌊 Lakefront Park is one of the best outdoor spots in St. Cloud.

Located on the south bank of East Lake Tohopekaliga, this park offers:
✔️ A playground & splash pad—great for kids
✔️ Walking trails—perfect for exercising or walking dogs
✔️ A beach area—our version of a Florida beach right on the lake

📌 Key Takeaway: Whether you love the outdoors or just want a place to relax, Lakefront Park is a must-visit spot for St. Cloud residents.

2. Rodeo Day: A Unique Local Tradition

🤠 Forget Presidents’ Day—here in St. Cloud, kids get off school for Rodeo Day!

This long-standing tradition celebrates Osceola County’s deep agricultural and ranching roots, with rodeo events, parades, and community gatherings.

📌 Key Takeaway: St. Cloud has a small-town charm with traditions you won’t find in every Florida city.

3. St. Cloud’s Ideal Location

📍 St. Cloud offers the best of both worlds: a small-town feel with proximity to Orlando’s attractions.

✔️ 30 minutes to Disney, Universal & major theme parks
✔️ 30 minutes to Downtown Orlando
✔️ 25 minutes to Orlando International Airport (MCO)
✔️ 1 hour to East Coast beaches (Cocoa Beach, Melbourne)
✔️ 1.5-2 hours to Gulf Coast beaches (Clearwater, St. Pete)

📌 Key Takeaway: If you want to be close to everything without the big-city chaos, St. Cloud is a great place to live.

4. A Look at St. Cloud’s History

🏡 St. Cloud was founded in 1909 as a retirement settlement for Union Civil War veterans.

If you visit downtown St. Cloud, you’ll notice streets named after Northern states like Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania, reflecting its historic roots.

📌 Key Takeaway: St. Cloud has a unique blend of history and modern development, giving it a distinct character compared to other Orlando suburbs.

5. St. Cloud’s Parks & Green Spaces

🌳 We were surprised by how many parks are in St. Cloud!

One of our favorites is Canary Park, a newer, inclusive playground designed for kids of all abilities.

Other great parks include:
✔️ Lakefront Park – Beach, trails, playground
✔️ Hopkins Park – Great for sports and family events
✔️ Partin Triangle Park – A local favorite for outdoor activities

📌 Key Takeaway: If you have kids or love outdoor activities, St. Cloud has plenty of parks and recreational spaces to enjoy.

6. Housing Prices & Best Neighborhoods

🏠 St. Cloud is one of the most affordable areas near Orlando.

✔️ More space for your money compared to Lake Nona or Winter Garden
✔️ Lots of new construction homes – Thousands of homes being built
✔️ Wide variety of options – From condos to large-acreage properties

Popular Neighborhoods in St. Cloud

✔️ Harmony – A master-planned community with a golf course & top-rated schools
✔️ Bay Lake Ranch – Large lots with no HOA, great for privacy
✔️ The Manor – Offers more space and non-HOA options
✔️ Downtown St. Cloud (State Streets) – Historic homes with character

📌 Key Takeaway: Whether you want new construction, a quiet rural setting, or a home with no HOA, St. Cloud has a neighborhood that fits your needs.

7. Do St. Cloud Homes Have HOAs?

🏡 Yes, but you have plenty of options.

✔️ Many new construction neighborhoods have HOAs with amenities.
✔️ Downtown St. Cloud, Bay Lake Ranch, and The Manor offer non-HOA homes.

📌 Key Takeaway: If you want land, privacy, and no HOA rules, St. Cloud offers more non-HOA options than most Orlando suburbs.

8. What About Alligators & Hurricanes?

🐊 Yes, there are alligators in St. Cloud.

  • If there’s water, assume a gator could be nearby.
  • Avoid walking dogs near lakes or ponds, especially at night.
  • Generally, alligators don’t bother people unless provoked.

🌪️ Hurricanes? Yes, but St. Cloud is inland.

  • Central Florida is much safer from hurricanes than coastal areas.
  • The biggest issue is usually power outages & fallen trees.
  • Florida building codes require homes to withstand high winds.

📌 Key Takeaway: Alligators and hurricanes are part of Florida life, but they’re manageable with common sense precautions.

9. St. Cloud’s Weather: What to Expect

☀️ It gets HOT. Florida summers are intense, with daily thunderstorms and high humidity.

🍂 But fall, winter, and spring are amazing!
✔️ Winter temperatures hover in the 60s-70s
✔️ No snow, no ice, and very few cold days

📌 Key Takeaway: Summers are tough, but the rest of the year is fantastic!

Final Thoughts: Is St. Cloud, FL Right for You?

St. Cloud is great if you want:
✔️ Affordable housing & more space than other Orlando suburbs
✔️ A small-town feel with outdoor amenities
✔️ Proximity to Orlando without being in the city
✔️ Family-friendly neighborhoods & top-rated schools

🚨 St. Cloud might not be for you if:
❌ You want tons of dining, nightlife, and shopping nearby
